What's different for me is that 1) nautilus doesn't *always* make a pile of the icons (more like one time out of two or three logins) and 2) I can sometimes fix the problem by running "killall nautilus." What I think is weird is that only my laptop does this. My desktop machine has had GNOME2 for a long, long, time, and it has never piled the icons. Weird, no? So don't despair; you're not the only person with this problem.
