Re: extremely slow startup times

This sounds like it is related to a DNS issue. For some reason gnome
needs to lookup the IP address for your hostname. If it takes a while to
get the result (even if that is failure), this can do this sort of
slowdown. The other time this happens is when you haven't set a hostname
for your machine (it is left at localhost.localdomain) and the once you
get a DHCP address from the network, the hostname changes, causing gnome
to get very confused.

I have found the simple solution is to give your machine a hostname and
make that an alias to the loopback address in /etc/hosts. For example
mine is:-

127.0.0.1 localhost damian-x20.cisco.com damian-x20

The hostname for my machine is damian-x20.cisco.com

That fixes all these problems.
