Configuration problems with new gnome2 install

OK, using the Ximian Gnome Red Carpet install I have installed all
packages for the Gnome2 system.

It *looks* great but I seem to have some config difficulties. Whnever I
try to start up or add somethjing to the panel (for instance, right now
my system seems stuck on a left hand mouse config - trying to add an
applet gives an error for the specific applet ie. gnome2-mixer-applet
etc) and things are not saved between sessions. Also, settings did not
migrate between 1.4 and 2 (for some reason I thought they would).

It appears to be a CORBA error as I get this message continually:
An error occrred while loading or saving information for
gnome-panel(fill in whatever app here from panel to nautilus) Some of
your configuration settings may not work properly.

When I hit details I get:
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0

Any ideas how to fix it?
Thanks!!
Daryl.
