I'm having a similar problem. I've been running snapshots for a while
(since right before 2.0.0 was released I think) on a redhat 7.3 system.
Recent upgrades seem to have broken font support in gnome-terminal. I
can only change the size of the font. The face is always the same (looks
like courier). When I had this problem a few weeks back, I downgraded
libzvt according to some messages on this list. That fixed it back then,
but it's not fixing it now. 

There's a bug listed on gnome.org which isn't very helpful:

I've tried switching my xconfig to Load "xtt" instead of Load
"freetype", and I've tried changing my XftConfig a little to no avail.
