Found a solution:

If I set the number of workspaces through the gnome menu -> Applications
-> Desktop preferences -> Advanced -> Sawfish -> Workspaces, the
settings are permanent.Shell settings are permanent if I set them
through the shell profile (duh).Forgive a newbe.
