After performing the downgrade, mentioned below, I can use Gnome 2
again. Had to tell Gnome that it had to start gnome-wm, but after that.
Seems to be working again.

P.S. I've seen this solution in the mailing list, but didn't think it

I was having the same problem you're experiencing and downgraded 
bonobo-activation to 
bonobo-activation-1.0.3.0.200210172030-0.snap.ximian.1.i386.rpm from 
http://primates.ximian.com/~louie/snaps/ and my problems seem to have 
cleared up.  If this works for you please let others on 
gnome-2-snapshots know as I'm not subscribed.
