I believe this is known.  It works ok when started from an xterm instead
of a launcher.

I have not (yet) messed with the ftp.x.c layout.  I can, though not
right now--there are more pressing issues at the moment.

I forgot to mention this.  I pulled out gnome-media from the build until
I have the time to get gstreamer in there.
