No fonts

I just installed the gnome 2.0 snap shot, and no fonts are displayed in the
2.0 programs.

including the gdm login, I just see a very tiny text box, where i type my
username and then passwrord.  Then when I get my desktop, the menu has no
fonts, so I had to guess my way into the run menu so I could bring up xterm
(gterm wasn't work either).

Can anyone offer me some insight in how to fix, or how to provide more info
(logs etc that could help).

I'm running rh 7.2, 2.4.9-31 (with win4lin patch and nvidia patch)
ximian updates
