Question about AA

I recently used the Ximian Gnome 2 snapshots to upgrade to Gnome 2. It
went without a hitch at first, but I've seen several odd problems, and
I've been unable to get AA working. I'm on a Redhat 7.2 box.

To start off with: I did read any readmes and guides I could find on
gnome.org but there weren't many. I know they aren't officially
supported yet, but I figured I'd give it a shot and see what happened.

Ok, as far as AA goes: I've removed my ~/.gnome directory and
/tmp/orbit-ntang to make sure old settings weren't kept (and I did
recreate ~/.gnome to make sure gnome-vfs would work). I added

		export GDK_USE_XFT=1
		exec gnome-session

To my ~/.gnomerc file, with no luck. I dug through the init scripts and
tried editing /etc/X11/prefdm and added this up top:

GDK_USE_XFT=1
export GDK_USE_XFT

But it didn't help. I also tried adding that to the top of my rc.local
in the hopes it would pick it up there, but again, with no luck. I've
dropped from init 5 to 3 and back again multiple times.

Also, sound's not working, but I need to play with that some more. Is
there any equivalent to control center that I'm missing, or is the apps
-> desktop prefs menu the only way to access that stuff? Having a
separate app was handy, but I can certainly live without it.

Anyways, if anyone has any ideas as to what I might try, I'd really like
to see AA working on my box. I admit I don't know much at all about
Gnome 2, so I might be missing something obvious. I checked gconf and
didn't see anything about AA.

Also, if I don't use Nautilus for my desktop, what are my options? Are
there any? Before I enabled Nautilus, I just had a plain gray
checkerbox background, which implies to me that nothing was actually
drawing the desktop itself.

Again, if I missed something obvious or whatever, I apologize for
wasting anyones' time.

Thanks in advance,
Nicholas
