Some  weirdness with it seems to have happenned - possibly due to debian
having multiple versions of automake about and files sticking around
from previous builds.

removed anything related to auto* and then used jhbuild to update and
build, and it seems to have built okay now

although there's problems with some other packages, possibly stemming
from the same issues.... i think i'm getting closer :)
