Nope, you don't have to buy anything.
Evolution remains of course. In fact, Novell even released the formerly
pay-soft Connector under GPL.
Ximian Desktop and Mono are different things. XD2 is a complete Gnome
Desktop, tweaked by Ximian. Mono is a .Net replacement. Both are free,
too -- but you don't need neither to use Evolution.
Regarding your attempt to install Evolution 1.2: I would recommend not
to.
Evolution 1.2 is really old. I would advise to install Evolution 1.4.6
(the current stable release). You can get those RPMs from the Ximian FTp
server:
ftp://ftp.ximian.com/pub/ximian-evolution/redhat-80-i386/
Using Red Carpet for installing the necessary Evo packages will be most
convenient.
