Well, this heavily depends on your actual needs and probably the
Exchange version you are currently running. I don't know about Exchange
features, as I never used it. Anyway...

This still applies. The IMAP server stores all the emails on a per user
basis, allowing access with any IMAP capable mail client. Sendmail
(well, postfix or any other SMTP server) sends out mails.

You can manage Contacts with an LDAP server. And if you need to manage
Calendars and Tasks on a centralized server, check out OpenGroupware.org
-- although I don't know about the current Evolution plugin state. There
are more features and options available than just mentioned.


Caveat: I never used Exchange, so this isn't necessarily entirely
correct...

AFAIK there is no *single* server OSS replacement. Although there sure
are other proprietary products out there.

Following the UN*X way it doesn't even make sense to have one product
doing all of them. There are specialized servers out there, doing a
great job on their domain. And they are replaceable, without having to
change everything.

Sure, you can stuff all of them on a single machine. And once you went
through the hassle of migration, there are great added values lurking.
Like easily integrating Spam and Virus (for Windows clients) scanners.
And RFC compliant mail headers, which you get for using proper SMTP
servers... ;-)

This is more a personal opinion than an official answer, though. This
list is *not* about Exchange server replacements.
