As Mark already mentioned, Gnome 2.2 should be fine for Evolution 2.0.x
releases.

FWIW: Evolution is officially part of the Gnome Desktop since Gnome 2.8,
but it does not depend on this version.

If you want to give Gnome 2.8 a try and build it, I would suggest using
Garnome [1]. You can build the entire Gnome 2.8 Desktop into a different
prefix (like /opt/gnome for example) and thus you can keep your existing
Gnome 2.2 (XD2) environment.
