Syncing on jpilot

I'm trying to get help on syncing my Treo 350 using jpilot running on SuSe 9.1
Pro. The error message I get is this:

Syncing on device /dev/ttyS0
Press the HotSync button now
********************************
pi_bind invalid argument
Check your serial port and settings
Exiting with status SYNC_ERROR_BIND
Finished.

This is new problem for me. I used jpilot successfully for months. However,
this past weekend, I needed, for the first time, to try to configure my
external modem for a dial-up internet connection. To do that, I used the
same serial port that I otherwise use for jpilot. Not only was I
unsuccessful in configuring the modem, but afterwards, when I tried to sync,
this error message appeared.

I've since deleted the modem settings, but that does not help. Can anyone
explain what the message means, and what I can try to fix it. I'm afraid
that I have to admit to being a relative newbie, so I need the instructions
in baby steps.

Thanks.
