You don't.  Sendmail is an MTA, it transports (sends) mail.  To retrieve
mail you need an IMAP, POP3, Exchange, Groupwise, or Domino service
running on your server.  What settings you put on the client depends on
the protocol/package you need to access.  Most distros come with a
couple of different IMAP/POP3 services (Cyrus [my recommendation], UW,
Courier, Dovecot, etc...)
