Excuse me for "going missing" - I was a bit ill and out-of-commission
for a while.

Let me backtrack and see if I understand something correctly: after
configuing the AOL account (with :587, etc.) and not succeeding in
sending messages from the AOL account, the unsent messages
stayed/piled-up in the Outbox until I deleted them later. When I went to
send a message from a POP mail account, a window popped up with the
e-mail address of my AOL account and asked me to input the AOL account
password. I could either cancel, or input the AOL account password and
attempt to send, at which time it errored. AOL was not "taking over" but
rather, in trying to send the message from a POP mail account, Evolution
was telling me that I still had several unsent messages from my AOL
account in the Outbox. It was asking for my PW in order to try to send
them. When I did input the PW, it did not succeed in sending them and
neither did the POP mail message get sent. I couldn't send POP mail
messages until I cleared the AOL messages from the Outbox and closed and
re-opened Evolution.

Is that right? It wasn't self-evident (to me at least) that in trying to
send a POP mail message, the window asking for my AOL PW was referring
to the queue of outgoing AOL messages rather than the message that I was
trying to send. A more explicit message would have helped (and made me a
little less crazy).
