The characters are ... Cyrillic! I checked the settings for character encoding and they are still where I originally set them - Western European (ISO 8859-1). I have not changed the keymap at all.

I communicate in both English and French with Evolution, but French messages are composed in a word processor and copy-and-pasted to the Evolution message area.
