An upgrade shouldn't pose a problem, though a downgrade might. More likely they neglected to switch on Outlook Web Access (OWA), which is the mechanism by which Connector communicates with the Exchange server. http://support.ximian.com/q?164 has details on how to check whether OWA is enabled on your server.
