Contacts list frozen in evo 1.4.6 (and several previous versions)

During one upgrade back when, somwhere, I lost the ability to add
entries to the contacts list.  The old entries I had created in the past
are still there, but I can't add a new one.

Selecting 'new contact' won't open the input window.

Right clicking on an address and picking 'add to addressbook' just goes
away without complaining and no new entry is added to the book.

Any ideas?
