What does it mean for software to come from Ximian at this point? Would
it suffice for SUSE to ship packages that include patches from Ximian?
This is already the case in SUSE Linux 9.1, which incorporates several
patches from XD2. How about if SUSE shipped packages that were built by
Ximian release engineers?

The Ximian/SUSE/Novell distinction is going to become increasingly
ambiguous.  That process has already begun.

9.1 comes with Evolution 1.4.6, not significantly different from the
Ximian version, AFAIK.  It's not like Ximian ships a heavily patched
version, and I don't think SUSE would go to the trouble of patching
their version.  SUSE's OOo is different from the Ximian one, which is
heavily customized.  IIRC, it's mostly a question of better KDE
integration vs. better Gnome integration.
