Hmm, forgot the most parts regarding Ximian Desktop.

Ximian Desktop basically is the Gnome Desktop. Granted, tweaked to
extreme with eye candy and userfriendlyness in mind.

However, as this is free software, any custom changes (aka patches that
make XD differ from a plain vanilla Gnome Desktop) are available to the
public and eventually will be included upstream to the Gnome Desktop.


On the other hand, do not forget the large discussion some weeks ago:
The current Ximian Desktop 2 is based on an outdated version of the
Gnome Desktop. All recent versions of the popular distros are shipping
with a newer version of Gnome Desktop anyway.

Running XD2 on a recent distro is kinda like a system downgrade...

This means, you should not ask for XD2. Ask for the next stable Ximian
Desktop, currently being developed. There even is a special mailing
list:

Patches and eye candy getting upstream, you wonder? Yeah. In fact I am
running the Gnome 2.6.1 Desktop, compiled by myself. The distro doesn't
really matter (Mandrake 10.0 for the curious ;).

You thought those wonderful Ximian themes like Gorilla and Industrial
aren't available unless running XD2? Nope. Looking at a great deep
blue-gray window decoration right now. :)

Oh, and btw, Evolution 1.5.8 is pretty stable and fun to work with. :-)


Red Hat tweaks his desktops for years. So does SuSE, Mandrake and any
other vendor. Ximian made money that way. Hmm, like all commercial
distros out there.

Any commercial distro has to earn money. If they aim for the end user,
the best argument is a nice desktop.

Thus the story just continuous, unaltered. SuSE needs to provide a great
desktop, if they want to sell to end users. Doesn't really matter if
they call it SuSE or "Novell/SuSE featuring Ximian" desktop.
