Let me guess, you are using KDE as Desktop Environment?

If this is true, is isn't actually Mandrake specific. AFAIK there are 2
possible ways to get it working:

- Add the gnome-settings-daemon to your KDE session.
- Adjust the displays DPI values of your KDE and Gnome Settings to
  match.

The issue likely is, that the DPI values don't match and unless the
gnome-settings-daemon is running, the font server returns unusable fonts
resulting by the requested font-size.
