Well, there is another possible cause for this, which came up on IRC
some days ago: A bad Icon Theme.

The point is, there are some icon themes not correctly inheriting the
default Gnome Icon Theme and therefore dropping some icons.


I don't remember all paths exactly, but this should work:

Try to change your (Gnome Desktops) Icon Theme to something healthy,
like GNOME. Use the Gnome Control Center or call 'gnome-theme-manager'
directly.

 Gnome Control Center / Theme / Theme Details / Icons

You can check the currently used theme with a simple command:
$ gconftool-2 --get /desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme

If you don't have the Gnome Control Center installed, it will be a Good
Thing (TM) to grab it anyways. If you insist on not installing, you even
can set this value using 'gconftool-2'.
