GNU Chess searches 15000 ply

Sometimes GNU Chess searches and finds mate, but increases the ply and 
searches again, finding mate, increases the ply and  so on.  I have a log 
file showing a search to 15000 plys.  Is this a known bug?  I have the game 
and log files.  The program was running with xboard in CYGWIN.
