Not as far as I know, I don't believe Xboard/Winboard "knows" enough state about the current state of the chess game to establish if a move is legal (I believe it misses certain castling restrictions, and certain draws). It does a pretty good job, but I don't think it aims to be complete, as it doesn't need to be. If you input an illegal move to a compatible engine it will reject it, and I believe Xboard handles this nicely.
