Dropping autotools 1.4 support

Hi Folks,

we have some patches pending to clean up the build process which require to drop autotools 1.4 support because some features only supported in autotools version 1.5 and greater are used.

If there is someone who can't upgade to autotools 1.5 or greater please let me know.

Otherwise i'll commit these changes next week.
