Instalation problem

Dear friends,
I'm trying to install MySQL-3.23.51-1.i386.rpm and MySQL-client-3.23.51-1.i386.rpm in my red hat 7.2 with kernel-2.4.7-10.
Then, when the instalation tells me about the success of this operation, I try to use the command:
>>/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h lerschsrv3 -p password 'new-password'
But it returns:
>>Enter password:
I have put all possible passwords, like, my root password, "mysql", 1234, 123456, "password", none, and always It gives me this result:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'lerschsrv3' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@lerschsrv3' (Using password: YES)'
What is happening??
Webmin gives me the same problem.
Can you help me??
