cp command

I cannot get the cp utility to accept the -f or the --force command-line 
option.

if I issue a command such as:

cp -f *.php /var/www/html

I am prompted with :

cp: overwrite /var/www/html/example4-3.php?


I am running Redhat LINUX version 7.3.
