   I just saw this recently but don't remember the specifics: when you
   get "argument list too long" it's actually a shell problem and not
   a problem with cp (or any other program).  Perhaps someone else on
   the list can chime in.

Wrong wrong wrong.  Stop blameing the shell and blame silly operating
systems that have an limit on the argument list.  Read the Coreutils
FAQ [1].
