Error Stale NFS file handle on giving ls command.

Sir

   We are comming across following problem on 250 gb external USB diskette.

    In the directory the data has been consolidated  on running command

    ls  -lt    Error is displayed as=20

    ls: .: Stale NFS file handle

   We are even unable to take backup of the files on tape /cartridge.

   We are able to list the files one dir back or one dir ahead.

   Can you help us out.
