I have derived help-version.sh from coreutils.
VERSION is defined in './configure' and used both in doc/ and the
executables.
Hence I  think it's a good thing that distcheck fails, thus signalling that
the working environment wasn't fully bootstrap'ped freshly for a release.

The commit is nice though, as it helps to better see what's wrong, thanks.
