just a recap:

two problems with my last set of patches.
my wording reguarding how i add $(builddir) != $(top_srcdir) needs work, and
i'm seeing a slowdown on the 32bit version.

I'm trying to trace the slowdown, would someone care to come up with better 
wording, and possibly a new message for bootstrap-cvs.sh to give for
build instructions? i've failed once. ;)
