OK. I was a bit slow or I did not read your first mail right.

The stuff you write about WORKS on i686-pc-linux-gnu. This problem seems to be 
a specific 64 bit problem. I will look at it at home, here I have only 32bit.

If you have trouble believing what you see, I gladly send you the complete 
compile log obtained by doing

$ make clean all >& output.txt
