Thanks! It still has the doc dir problem, though, 
and --disable-perl-plugin still doesn't work - it's still being enabled 
regardless of the switch.

Interestingly, --without-perl-plugin disables it at least for configure 
but something in the GIFTServer subdir still wants to link against it, it 
seems:

/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.2.0/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: 
cannot find -lGIFTAcPerl
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.2.0/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: 
cannot find -lGIFTQuPerl
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
