Hi,

I still have no idea, which Linux distribution you use, only which 
compiler. If it is debian-based then there are packages for gift 
available, so you can at least test whether it works with an older version.

The more information you supply the higher is the proability that 
someone will be able to help you.

The problem happens clearly before the make step as your compiler is not 
even regognized.
