Dear Zhigao,

GIFT is more a research project (that actually stopped several years 
ago) than a product, so there is indeed very little documentation.
I am not sure whether a detailed documentation exists, but there is 
really not too much that is needed.

All you need is the command for indexing a collection 
(gift-add-collection.pl) and the command for starting the server (gift). 
There are some old papers describing the techniques and also the 
communication protocol that you could have a look at.

The interfaces are also fairly straightforward to set up.
