Did you index a collection before starting the gift server? (Otherwise 
starting the server does not make much sense)
Did you give the path to a configuration file and the port number when 
starting the gift server?
The message seems to mean to me that it is searching for the 
configuration file at /root/gift-config.mrml but it does not seem to be 
there.
Do you run gift as root?

In general it is best if you write as well which version of linux and 
gcc you are using.
