patches 81-84 are applied to CVS.
on my opteron (2ghz), a 1.0 second process is down to .46 seconds..
on my pentium 4 (2.2ghz), a 1.8 second process is down to .85 seconds..

I'd appreciate feedback reguarding the mean things I've done to the code.

I'm now reading perl books, so that I can impliment wolfgang's idea of a feature-extraction piped process.
