You need to add at least one image collection, start the GIFT server
from the command line, and then connect to it via a client such as Charmer.

This is described in Doc/gift-guide.sgml in the gift-0.1.14 directory
(or perhaps in a nicer format if the documentation build step worked for
you).

PS. The information on indexing times and collection sizes in
Doc/gift-guide.sgml is very outdated (and thus pessimistic). Also the
README file refers to Doc/gift-guide.txt, which does not exists - though
it is fairly easy to work out what is there instead.
