i pushed something to "output-WIP". "output" seems to be a dead-end (and
unrelated), will delete that eventually.

now there's some overlap with the waves rework, not too bad, i
guess...

and: a print_results call in s__solve (for traces) that i don't know how
to deal with properly, any idea?

(still no clue about s_fo.)
