I am not sure what you mean by "take up the ball" exactly.

I am currently not a GNU (co-)maintainer, and have never been.

I can expand the patches to comprise hopefully appropriate
changes to the NEWS file, and provide a suitable commit message
in a format usable with 'gitlog-to-changelog'.  I can do that
using 'git format-patch' so the result can be applied easily to
the development repository.

At least initially I'd feel more comfortable with existing GNU
inetutils maintainers reviewing and applying my patches.

I am open to start on the way towards becoming a co-maintainer
of GNU inetutils, but I do not feel comfortable taking over too
many responsibilities at once.

I am mostly interested in the telnet client for interoperability
with existing systems.  That is the one component I am likely
to use regularly in the future.  GNU inetutils comprises more
than just that.

I hope that you can make use of the help I am able to provide.
