I have fixed this -- the problem was that the NEWS file didn't have any
entries for the fake release.

I don't know how to modify the NixOS build rules -- if you have time to
engage with the NixOS people, it would be nice if they can make this
compile again.  Otherwise, let's just drop that part from
README-release.
