Since you are actively working on an implementation for this feature,
I will drop patch 2 from the series, and leave the implementation of
the extensible environment feature entirely up to you.

I don't have much spare time left to devote to this process, so my
last effort will be the submission of patch set v3 consisting of just
a single patch, that still makes use of fnmatch(), to implement the
default whitelist and path sanitization in accordance with the latest
feedback provided by Solar Designer.
