libext is only "a".  for shared libs, it can be calculated from shrext_cmds.
  eval std_shrext=\"$shrext_cmds\"
  -L* | -R* | -l* | *.${libext} | *${std_shrext})

that would only support libs that end in ".so".  but maybe that's OK.
