Okay uh. Down-stem flags! Slightly more common than expected, Petrucci
seems to change his style from putting the flag on the right to putting the
flag on the left in about 1501-3 idk. Point is he puts the flag on the
right like twice and then always on the left (on down stems; on up stems
it's always on the right).

I also raised the question of whether the diagonal point of the flag should
converge with the staff line or not. Also worth pointing out that in the
second editions of all the Motetti de la corona books, Pasoti and Dorico
lean more towards regular mensural with their flags but maintain basically
all other aspects of Petrucci's style. See for example the tenor part of

Then, two-flag glyphs! I've scoured a little less than half the IMSLP
archive thus far and haven't found anything. I'll keep looking ofc, though
I'm disinclined to believe Petrucci ever did 32nd notes bc they would
honestly look kinda fugly with that tall-ass flag, unless he did them
something like the proof-of-concept-esque thing I threw together in
inkscape in 5 minutes to theorise what we could do if we have to make up a
glyph ourselves (forgive my use of "we"):

The rest of the e-mail was just me suggesting a neo-mensural flag style to
have smth more solid for neo-mensural idk and suggesting Playford's style
from mid-to-late 17th c. Apollo's Banquet at

part 1 – is great to grab flag glyphs from bc he's kind enough to explain
basic music notation to you before getting to the actual music. There's
even a bit of violin tab! Anyway all the samples were from here

and p. 8 is particularly good. Only thing is bro is not too consistent on
whether the second flag is closed or open, but seems to prefer open. As you
can see they're a tad more compact than regular mensural flags :)
