Yes, at least I do (though I'm lately only looking at them once per
week).

The main advantage that I see for comments is that it leaves a direct
trace. Otherwise the person closing the issue must first copy the
comment and / or link to the mailing list archives. My 2 cents, that
makes it easier and also gives your GitLab account more visibility.
