Hi, wiki admin here. The wiki has suffered a lot of lags and outages
lately. It improved things when I blocked some crawlers and especially
the one for Meta's AI two weeks ago, but the outages have still reappeared.
I noticed an outage yesterday and, as a stop-gap measure, blocked an IP
range that was making large numbers of bot-like requests without announcing
it in the User-Agent. Today there was an outage again and I didn't see
any IP range standing out in number of requests. It was also a bit surprisi=
ng
to see the wiki overloaded because the number of requests was not that high
(on the order of 10 requests/second, variable depending on the moment, and =
not
counting blocked bots), so this afternoon I took a look at speeding up the
wiki, for which I temporarily implemented a block of all requests except
those from my own IP in order to be able to actually access it and test
its performance, and that's probably the moment where you wrote the above.
Now there's more caching, and I also temporarily blocked all requests to th=
e
page Special:RecentChangesLinked, which were making up the vast majority
of requests, certainly from bots again (though distributed in the IP addres=
s
space). So the wiki is back=E2=80=A6 for now. I don't know how long this wi=
ll last and
it's an unsatisfactory state to have this page inaccessible, but I'm doing =
what
I can with the time I have, sorry.
