Thanks for pointing out the standard engraving practice for new clef 
position. Good to know!

In this case, I'm working on the gamba music of the middle Baroque 
composer Marin Marais (1656-1728). His engravings frequently, if not 
always, position the new clef at the beginning of the measure in which 
they take effect.
