Well, yes.
And that's why I do not understand:

%% not working:
  \layout {
    \context {
      \Score
      chordNameExceptions = \myException
    }
  }

%% works:
\layout {
    \set Score.chordNameExceptions = \myException
  }

%% Setting it in the music like below works as well:
  \new ChordGrid \chordmode {
    \set Score.chordNameExceptions = \myException
    c1:1.3.5+
  }
