Changing to an odd numbered voice forces the stems, ties, slurs, and
articulations up; even numbered voices force them down.  Rests are
positioned further up or down and horizontal shifting occurs to avoid note
collisions.

In general, if you have two melodic lines on the same staff, use a
\voiceXxx command to separate them.
